STEPHANIE GARBER

(Book 1 in the Once Upon a Broken Heart Duology)

Synopsis:

How far would you go for happily ever after?

For as long as she can remember, Evangeline Fox has believed in true love and happy endings...until she learns that the love of her life will marry another.

Desperate to stop the wedding and to heal her wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic but wicked Prince of Hearts. In exchange for his help, he asks for three kisses, to be given at the time and place of his choosing.

But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game—and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’d pledged. He has plans for Evangeline, plans that will either end in the greatest happily ever after or the most exquisite tragedy….

Once Upon a Broken Heart

My rating:  ★★★★

Categories: YA, fantasy, romance

Content:

Language: maybe a few minor swear words, if that

Violencetalks of murder, it is said someone has been brutally mauled (but is still alive), attempted murder, and humans try to complete the process of turning into a vampire by getting out of their cages and hunting down a human.

Sex: there are several kisses (some described in more detail than others), several descriptions of showy dresses, a game called kissing chess where players act as the people and kiss the other players, a few allusions to sex, and there was one scene where one of the male characters kisses Evangeline's neck and pushes her skirt up a little (but nothing happens).

LGBTQ: two men holding hands go to a room labeled "love."

My Review: I liked this a lot more than I thought I would based on the first chapter or two.  Evangeline seemed helpless and naïve at first, but as the book continued, her character developed and I actually liked her.  Garber's writing is not for everyone, but I started to love it.  There are a lot of unusual similes and metaphors that really inserted you into the book and made you experience the story with Evangeline.
