MARISSA MEYER

Synopsis:

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland—the infamous Queen of Hearts—she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.

Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

Heartless

My rating:  ★★★★★

Categories: YA, fantasy, romance, retelling

Content:

Language: Not present

Violence: Descriptions of blood, monsters and creatures (including the Jabberwocky), decapitation, death, a brief and undescriptive scene where a heart is cut out, several vicious and fatal attacks from the Jabberwocky, sword fighting, executions, and mentions of war.

This isn't violence, but madness is a prominent theme throughout.

Sex: Kissing, romantic pining, marriage (and two characters might sleep in the same bed together, but if they do, nothing happens)

LGBTQ: It is suggested that one of the male characters is in love with another.

My Review: I love this book so much!  I read it last around two years ago, but someone requested a review and I am never going to give up a chance to gush about this masterpiece!  All of the Marissa Meyer books I've read are mostly extremely "clean," so the content is similar in each of them.  Even if you don't particularly like Alice in Wonderland (like me), I'd still recommend giving Heartless a try!  It is so wonderfully written and the romance—as always with Meyer's—is beautiful!  Definitely need to reread it again!
