GINNY MYERS SAIN

Synopsis:

La Cachette, Louisiana, is the worst place to be if you have something to hide.

This tiny town, where seventeen-year-old Grey spends her summers, is the self-proclaimed Psychic Capital of the World--and the place where Elora Pellerin, Grey's best friend, disappeared six months earlier.

Grey can't believe that Elora vanished into thin air any more than she can believe that nobody in a town full of psychics knows what happened. But as she digs into the night that Elora went missing, she begins to realize that everybody in town is hiding something - her grandmother Honey; her childhood crush Hart; and even her late mother, whose secrets continue to call to Grey from beyond the grave.

When a mysterious stranger emerges from the bayou - a stormy-eyed boy with links to Elora and the town's bloody history - Grey realizes that La Cachette's past is far more present and dangerous than she'd ever understood. Suddenly, she doesn't know who she can trust. In a town where secrets lurk just below the surface, and where a murderer is on the loose, nobody can be presumed innocent--and La Cachette's dark and shallow lies may just rip the town apart.

Dark and Shallow Lies

My rating:  ★★★★★

Categories: YA, thriller, mystery, other, romance, supernatural, fantasy

Content:

Language: Frequent uses of mild language and stronger language such as "s" and "f".

Violence: Mentions of underage drinking, abusive parents, murder (including a double murder), descriptions of blood and mutilation, gunshots, a supernatural ability that allows a character to sense death, arson, some discussion of murdered children.  The atmosphere of the novel is creepy and suspenseful, but the violence isn't described in-depth.

Sex: Several mentions and allusions to sex/sexual activity, kissing, mentions of characters loosing their virginity, a scene where the characters begin to undress while kissing/touching (but they do not have sex).

LGBTQ: One of the characters is mentioned to be gay

My Review: I honestly have no idea why I loved this book so much.  I guessed many of the plot twists and I wanted more development of the romance between the characters who ended up together.  I think a huge part of my enjoyment was based on the atmosphere—Sain created such an amazing setting.  Her writing style pulled me into the story and the supernatural element made it different from other thrillers/mysteries I've read recently.  I've seen other reviews complain about the pacing, but it worked for me.  I finished it in one sitting.
